Final Portfolio Assignment

Creating a portfolio of your work, and a self-assessment that examines that portfolio, is a way to take charge of your educational experience. Not only will the instructor assess your work; you will also assess your work and your experience with writing and reading. The portfolio will give you a fair indication of how much you've learned  in the class.

The possible scores are High Pass, Pass, and Fail.  The portfolio is due Thursday or Friday, April 26 or 27.

The final portfolio is comprised of three separate parts:

1. Your favorite essay (excluding Essay 1 because it's a story).  (But include all final drafts.)

2. An evaluation of this essay using as much of your understanding of what makes good academic writing as you can.  Thus it will make sense to use terms like transitions, main idea, ethos, etc. You will, of necessity, need to refer to specific parts of your essay, quoting from it when necessary.  (Suggested length:  300-500 words)

3. A description of how you go about reading an essay for an assignment.  I will be looking for evidence of your self-awareness of the things you do to understand and respond to what you read.  The best way to do this would be to reflect on your reading of a particular essay late in the term--or even to read a short new piece and articulate how you read.  (Suggested length:  150-250 words)

Place all the above pieces in a manila folder or the like in my mailbox in Fahy 362.
