Final draft, Essay 1, with new metatext.  Print out plus enter in Learning Space. Begin Essay II.  Start by writing freewrite on what holds anyone back from wanting or achieving the American Dream.  Consider "Two Kinds," "The Lesson," "Rachel and Her Children," the Bing interview.
Day 11
Feb. 7
Read Greenstein essay (Speculations 370) and write a one-sentence summary of each of the parts given in class.  Then freewrite in response to one or two ideas that particularly capture your attention, especially as they relate to the topic for Essay 2.  Submit in Learning Space. Go over summary sentences and create an overall summary as a full class.  Share freewrites and discuss how gender affects experiencing or achieving the American Dream.
Day 12
Feb. 9
Read Lorde essay (Speculations 422).  Divide essay into parts and write a one-sentence summary of each part.  Then freewrite in response to one or two ideas that particularly capture your attention, especially as they relate to the topic for Essay 2..  Submit in Learning Space. Go over summary sentences and write full-essay summaries in small groups.  Share freewrites and discuss how sexual orientation affects experiencing or achieving the American Dream.

Read Telander essay (Speculations 263).  Divide essay into parts and write a one-sentence summary of each part.  Then freewrite in response to one or two ideas that particularly capture your attention, especially as they relate to the topic for Essay 2..  Submit in Learning Space. Go over summary sentences and write full-essay summaries in small groups.  Share freewrites and discuss how race and class affect experiencing or achieving the American Dream.

Read Swardson essay (Speculations 493).  Write pithy labels for each part of the essay.  Then use these labels to create an elegant, inclusive summary.  Then freewrite in response to one or two ideas that particularly capture your attention, especially as they relate to the topic for Essay 2..  Submit in Learning Space. Compare full-essay summaries and evaluate them.  Share freewrites and discuss how class affects experiencing or achieving the American Dream.
Day 15
Feb. 16
1. Pick the topic and Speculations essay you wish to focus on for Essay 2.  Using the internet, find another piece of writing that helps you think more about the topic.  Write a short (less than one page) think-piece, in which you identify a question, explain why it's interesting or important, and lay out your best thinking to answer it.  Submit in Learning Space.  2. Make an entry in your Learning Log.     You should have visited the Writing Center at least three times by now. Discuss or comment on essay topics in Learning Space. 
Day 16
Feb. 19
Essay 2, first draft, with metatext.  Enter in Learning Space. Full-class workshop of one essay.  Peer response using Learning Space.
Day 17
Feb. 21
Start revising Essay 2.  Optional conference with me.  Continued full-class and small-group work on revision.  Some time to write in class and get individual attention from me.

Essay 2, second draft, with new metatext.  Enter in Learning Space Editing work.
Day 19
Feb. 26
Essay 2, final draft, with new metatext.  Printout to hand in; enter in Learning Space. Begin Essay 3
