Assignment 5

For the 8:30 class:  We will prepare a list of questions to ask the various SHU people whom you will interview.  Thus you don't have to interview anyone over the weekend.  Instead, continue working on your chart, adding both to the points on the left-column and to the authors on the right-hand column.  I recommend strongly that you read an article that focuses on the admissions policies of a particular school.  (There are a few in the MediaCenter database.)  You can also add yourself as one of the authors, so that you begin to articulate your position on the issue.  (See chart below.)

For the 1:00 class:  We may have a debate after all, depending on what people read for Monday.  You should read an article that helps you think more about your essay question/position (see MediaCenter in Learning Space).  As I mentioned in class, I think for most (if not all) of you, it would be helpful to narrow your topic by focusing on a particular issue.  Continue working on your chart, adding both to the points on the left-column and to the authors on the right-hand column.  You can also add yourself as one of the authors, so that you begin to articulate your position on the issue.  (See chart below.)

My question:  What form should affirmative action take in education today?

My Thoughts

1. What are the dangers in using–or not using–affirmative action?

The effects of structural discrimination may not be addressed if you don’t use some kind of affirmative action.

Affirmative action winds up leading to more discrimination against those it’s designed to help.

Affirmative action is not the problem.

I tend to agree with Pincus.  We can't afford not to have affirmative action-- otherwise we're giving up.

2. What really promotes change in the lives of minorities today? (What's the underlying problem?)

Ask educators to modify their standards for admissions, though not by creating quotas (592).

Search hard for good black candidates but don't in any way change the requirements (573-574).

Cose actually seems pretty pessimistic about creating real change.

3. Standards

Standards should be modified to allow more minorities in.

Standards should absolutely not be modified.

Standards already are modified for whites; what’s so bad about modifying them for blacks?
