1. Articulate your question or position for Essay 4 in a few sentences. Then

2. Pick an essay from the Media Center American Dream essays in Learning Space or from another Lexis-Nexis essay (must be over 2,000 words) found on University's full-text database site.

3. Read and summarize essay and respond to it in a way that develops your thinking on your topic.  Put in Learning Space.

4. Create a chart that summarizes at least three points, as they show up in at least three essays, related to your question/position for Essay 4.  The point of this exercise is to identify key points related to your question/issue and to start to lay out how the various authors think about them so that you can prepare for the debate and, ultimately, your essay.

2. What really promotes change in minority situation today?  (What's the underlying problem?) Ask educators to modify their standards for admissions, though not by creating quotas (592). Search hard for good black candidates but don't in any way change the requirements (573-574). Affirmative action isn't the real problem (though it true that it doesn't work).  Our society's continuing racism is the real problem (595). Eliminate anything that promotes the idea of victimization that arises from the guilt of the Haves (611).
