Bloom's Taxonomy

Foundational Knowledge Built Upon Bloom's Taxonomy

A working knowledge of Bloom's Taxonomy in relationship to effective
questioning skills will serve as a strong foundation to build upon for
content area specific questioning skills.

There are 6 levels of Bloom's Taxonomy:
Knowledge
Comprehension
Application
Analysis
Synthesis
Evaluation

Each one is important.  The 1st three in the list above serve as a platform
for the latter three.  The latter three would be considered higher order
thinking skills (HOTS).

Visit all of the links below and actively participate in the activities
provided on some of the sites. If you are working with a partner compare and
discuss your activity responses.

Link 1 will provide a basic understanding of each level of Bloom's Taxonomy
and opportunity to interact and create your own sample questions at each
level.

Links 2, 3, and 5 will be useful sources for you to reference while

completing activities.  You may want to bookmark these links for future easy

reference.  They will serve as a guide and a support in developing quality
questions for your lesson plans that will facilitate the development of
critical thinking skills in your students.

Link 4 will place demands on you to incorporate HOTS as you apply, analyze,
synthesize, and evaluate the content found on this site into purposeful
activities that you may use with your students.

  LINKS

Link 1     PPT :  THE BIG BAD WOLF MEETS BLOOM'S TAXONOMY
An informative PowerPoint on Bloom's Taxonomy.  It is interactive with
opportunity to practice creating your own questions at each level of
Bloom's.  Ample supports are built into this area of the PPT.
The Big Bad Wolf Meets Bloom's Taxonomy - Develop tasks that require high order thinking skills.
(click on the 2nd hyperlink down on the above page)

Link 2     BLOOM'S TAXONOMY BREAKDOWN:
Roles, Process Verbs & Products from Bloom’s Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain
A helpful chart for easy reference.  You may want to print out the chart
and/ or bookmark this site for easy reference.

Link 3     MAJOR CATEGORIES IN THE TAXONOMY OF EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
An informative web site that also provides links to other quality sites on
Bloom's should you want more information.  It is suggested that you bookmark
this site for future easy reference.

Link 4     ASKING GOOD QUESTIONS
(Allow approximately 3 hours to complete.  You make break that into 3
seperate sessions if you'd like - the choice is yours.)
Read through each section of this mini-WebQuest site *as well as the
resources provided (as they are excellent). Take notes as needed. After you
are familiar with higher order thinking skills, Bloom's Taxonomy, and the
difference between assessments OF learning vs. assessments FOR learning, you will create
a two-page questionnaire for your students using one of the free
test-making sites provided. This will allow you to view results and create
other surveys for your students. It will also help you create good questions.

Link 5    APPLYING BLOOM'S TAXONOMY
“Extending Children’s Special Abilities – Strategies for primary classrooms”
Included on this page are suggested ACTIVITIES to engage your STUDENTS in
that correlate with the various levels of Bloom's as well as questioning
skills.  This is also another useful reference chart to print out and
bookmark.

**  As you plan your lessons this week scaffold instruction building upon
and using all levels of Blooms Taxonomy.  Aim to move students into the
upper 3 levels into critical thinking.  (Problem based learning & project
based learning, PBL, lends itself to HOTS.)

OTHER RESOURCES
Take a moment to think of and search for other resources on quality
Questioning Skills as they relate to HOTS and Bloom's Taxonomy.  Record them
in a Journal to share with colleagues.  Also, feel free to share them with
me via e-mail, as I may choose to include them when I periodically update
this site.

Although this is a WebQuest, resources do not have to be solely limited to
web sites.
