Holds
Enthusiastic Reader Breakfast

Student
achievement and success is celebrated continually at Jackson
Avenue School. In addition to
ability, student attitude and enthusiasm is recognized and rewarded as
well. Classroom teachers select their most enthusiastic reader in each and
every classroom. These students are treated to a festive hot breakfast
organized and spearheaded by Ms. Patterson, the school librarian. At the
breakfast students also receive a certificate of recognition, a book, and a
bookmark. The PTA generously sponsors and facilitates the expense of the
breakfast and books. Jackson Avenue’s Enthusiastic Breakfast was held on
May 13, 2004.
(A special thank you to parents that were present:

Living The
Dream At Jackson Avenue School
February 2004
Honoring
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. takes on many expressions at Jackson Avenue
School. From Read-A-Louds about the Nobel Peace Prize winner to school-wide
assemblies and numerous classroom activities we remember Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.’s life and how he changed and shaped not only the United States of
America, but also the world toward peace and racial tolerance.
Mrs. Carol Wickersheim’s first grade class
honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through committing “100
Acts of Kindness”. No act of kindness is too small or too great and neither
is our age, whatever it may be. Examples of some of the acts of kindness
performed by the students in Mrs. Wickersheim’s class are: Willaim Organ
shared his crayons with the other children at his table, Corin Cobbs helped
Ariana with her Math, Marcel Afif helped his friend pick up his books, Joe
Burgos comforted his crying friend and shared his ‘indoor lunch’ word
searches, Juan Pena found and returned his friend’s marker, and the list
goes on.
At Jackson Avenue students and staff are living
the dream, as in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “I have a dream
that one day little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands
with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and
brothers. … When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every
village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able
to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men,
Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and
sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last!
thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

NJ
Assistant Commissioner of Education, Dr. Judith Weiss, accompanied by state
professional development specialist, Ms. Norah Peck, visited Jackson Avenue
School on Tuesday, January 6, 2004. As a result of Jackson Avenue School
having received the 2003 Governor’s School of Excellence Award they came for
a site visit. Also at the school, to greet Dr. Weiss and Ms. Peck, were
district officials: Mayor Jack Zisa, Councilman Mark Stein, Mr. Frank
Albolino, Board of Ed. President, Mr. Daniel Kirsch, Board of Ed. Member,
Dr. Joseph Montesano, Superintendent, Mr. Lex Greenwood, interim Asst.
Superintendent, as well as school Principal Mr. Robert Corrado and Assistant
Principal Janet James. Assistant Commissioner Weiss was effusive as she
exclaimed, “I am blown away by the tremendous presence and support that is
here in this district. That so many district officials, Board of Education
members, as well as the superintendent are present today speaks volumes to
me about this district. The sense of community here is very special”
“It is no wonder that this school is a School of
Excellence. When everyone – teachers, students, parents, administration,
Central Office, the Board of Education, and the community are all pulling
and working together for the same purpose everything falls into place.”,
stated Dr. Weiss. She was impressed not only with the instructional quality
of the teachers, but commented further, “Here at Jackson Avenue the
environment is filled with such a caring and compassion for the students.”
Dr. Weiss and Ms. Peck enjoyed their visit at Jackson Avenue School
thoroughly and implied that in the not too distant future others from the NJ
Department of Education may also want to visit Jackson Avenue School as
well.

Multi-Cultural Emphasis at Jackson Avenue Holiday Performance
12/18/03
Many
voices of the Holiday Season exclaimed, “I celebrate Christmas…. I
celebrate Hannukkah… I celebrate Kwanza…. I celebrate Las Posadas…!”, at
Jackson Avenue School. A festive, multi-cultural theme made a joyful sound
on Thursday, December 18, 2003. Students in grades 3 and 4 gave two
outstanding live holiday performances before a packed out auditorium.
Both
students and staff worked diligently for over one month in preparation for
the event. Costumes, art work, instrumentalists, soloists, and sound crew
all worked together as a cohesive team for the culminating performance. The
performance was video-taped and should air on local cable channel 72 soon,
perhaps over the schools holiday recess week (Dec. 24 - Jan. 1). A special
note of thanks and appreciation goes to Ms. Donna Fuscaldo – vocal music
teacher, Mr. Vincent Kutrow – instrumental music teacher, Ms. Cheryl
Donatuccio - Art teacher, and Mr. George Liosi – video-tographer.
