Don't pay too much attention to your first response. It's wrong to generalise a nation. As in many asian countries, the family is highly important. I've seen many Vietnamese work astonishingly hard for family cohesion. I can't give you any words of wisdom, but perhaps some personal experience will suffice. My first VN girlfriend didn't quite have her hand in my wallet, but certainly a finger or two. I ended our relationship, however, because of her character. Also, forgive me, I met another girl who is as sweet as anything you can imagine. Unlike the first, she doesn't rate money too highly. She would love me even if I was poor. I hope that helps.
