I Served On Panther Flight

From Daryl Winn, on Mon, 21 May 2001 11:40:10 GMT (in response to: Panther Flight)

I arrived in Viet Nam at 11:30 p.m Aug. 30, 1970 at Cam Rahn Bay. Fifteen minutes after arrival we got a mortar attack. I have to admit I was petrified. I spent three months at Tuy Hoa in the Security Police Squadron there on the night shift then they closed Tuy Hoa down and I was sent to Phan Rang where I was assigned to "Panther Flight". Hearing guys talk about it sure brings back a lot of memories. I did some time out at the beach and out at the "wells" too. I like to got my butt shot off at the wells but managed to take cover and survive. I remember one tower we had at Phan Rang. I think it was called Bravo 6. It was the tallest tower in the Nam. It took about thirty minutes to get all your crap up in it. Then you were wore out and had to rest.
I remember a few guys from Phan Rang. I remember my buddy Gary Blair from somewhere in Indiana although he probably don't remember me. I remember a high school chum that was in the SP squadron there and drowned when he got back to the states. His name was Rex Ragain. John Andrew worked at the R&R Center. I hung around with him a lot.
I remember all the rocket attacks we got. We got one the morning we were going to leave. Man the sirens were wailing and I just said "heck with it I'm stayin' in bed." And I did. I guess it was pretty stupid but I got out of the Nam alive.
I remember I had a pot that I used to pop corn in. The hootch maid took it and her and a bunch of other gooks were making "Nook Mau" in it. My God that stuff stunk. I told her to just keep the pot after that.
Man I could go on and on about this cause the memories keep coming up now. I am now 100% disabled with the VA and also draw Social Security Disability so I'm not doin' too bad at all. The doc's say I have some heart problems which I never had until after the Nam. I think Agent Orange caused it but who knows. Anyway, email me if you want. My address is Snug49@msn.com.
