The VC hit the portable fuel storage area on the concrete runway side with recoiless rifle. It was a pretty awsome sight for a 19 year old. 55 gallon drums exploding and flying high like fireworks. I was on the crew that first arrived (AF Fire/Rescue)and stopped the progress of the fire. We were waundering were everyone else was. The flight tower didn't sound the attack sirens - so we didn't know we were under attack. Everyone else was in the bunkers - the four of us were alone for 20 min fighting this fire. I survived in hut 2224 in the 555th CES squadron area.I still have 8mm videos of Bob Hope and President Johnson's visit at Cam Ranh in December 1967.
