I was there in 1971 with the Air Force, as an air cargo specialist. I remember the initial fire in the fuel dump, then several very large explosions that were quite a sight to see. We later found out that these were the daisycutter (10,000lb) bombs cooking off. The next morning it was still burning and I was sitting on the stairs of our hootch on Herky hill watching it, when all of a sudden another one cooked off. I can still see the shock wave traveling across the runway as it compressed the moisture from the air. A Flying Tiger stretched DC8 was on final at the time with everything hanging down. The concusion must have really jolted it because the crew pulled everything back up and hauled butt. I have tried to research the local newspaper archives to see if it was reported, with no success. I wish I would have had my camera with me that first night. I have not seen any fireworks display since that can hold a candle to what we saw......it was spine tingling.
