Teach in Vietnam

From Katharine, on Thu, 23 Oct 2003 10:40:42 GMT (in response to: i want to teach english in vietnam. )

Hi from another USA vet! I've taught English in 4 countries across Asia and Europe. Look at www.eslcafe.com to get you started with lots of information on teaching anywhere in the world. If you are a native speaker with a passport from an English-speaking country you are marketable. If you have a bachelor's degree (in any field) on top of that you are VERY marketable. Short of a bachelor's, any associate's degree will help. Look into taking the CLEP test and getting as much out of military tuition assistance as you can. I finished my MS in the Army as an enlisted person through an online program from a major state university. Look into all the distance ed options you can because military are rather motivated people who can make themselves work (yu need that for online classes) and it's quite a relief to go home to go to school. There is a lot to be said for getting an accredited degree in lounging clothes. Studying is not a drag when you are studying something you like; it's more like leisure reading and chatting with your friends/classmates online about your common favorite topic. It's rewarding. If you have a degree (US passport or not) you are setting yourself up for success in the future; and with a US passport REALLY doing yourself a huge favor. Then you can be legitimately hired with proper visa paperwork and helath insurance. No visa runs, no illegal schools, no wondering if you'll get paid or not for you. There is a clear benefit--go for it.

Since you speak Vietnamese reasonably well you should be able to get a job there with nice pay. You could also request to be transfered to English teaching hot spots like Korea to network & try out the water before getting out.
