I''m viet born in the USA. I have a 4yrs BS and in my mid 20's. I hate to say it..I've tried also to teach in english..but for anyone that's asian with asian facial features it's very hard to find a job in Saigon teaching english and this includes a teaching certificate plus a 4 year degree. The Vietnamese, as far as the locally owned schools, are more in it for the business than for the educated graduates in which they produce. They want to reflect a truly "foreign" taught school in which they prefer a caucasian face and look for the "company image"... the model native english speaker:....a caucasian. I found that the jobs I was offered despite the 1 year experience in tutoring esl in america ..I was consistently offered 1/4 the salary per month of a dually qualified caucasian. Yes, Vietnam is a third world country and their prejudices and biases are still closed minded and filled with preconceptions and prejudices. It helps when simply applying ....dressing sharp(business casual) and do not carry a backpack..instead an attache' might give a better perception of yourself. My opinion is not only the result of my findings but my relatives in Vietnam also concurred. and remember if your asian trying to teach english in vietnam...there is no such thing as an Equal Opportunity Employer.
