PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

RATIONALE. It is a truism people from all walks of life converge in a school. We shall be meeting people of different upbringing. To name a basic few: culture, religion, race and classroom management. I would like to give emphasis on these important dimensions in teaching though I believe there are more educational dimensions to consider in the academe.

CULTURE. I believe in teaching there are numerous people that come together in a school. If we have thirty (30) students in a class, we will have to adjust, as a teacher, thirty times to their culture. It does not necessarily follow that we have to be one of them. But giving due respect to their culture is a great relief over them. We, as teachers of morality and culture gain back respect. Respect begets respect.

RELIGION. “Al salaam walaikum wa rihamat tulahi wa bharakathu!” greets a Muslim student. Or consider salutations such as “Tsum rit su,” “Chiao Ba! Man que com!,” “Namaste.” As a teacher, what shall we do? We might want to greet him in the same manner but we just don’t know how. The first reaction is to say “hi” or “hello” or worst, ignore him. We shall make it a point to spend a minute or two every meeting to consider such greetings. Remember, respect begets respect!

RACE. So what if he’s black? He’s white? He’s yellow? He’s brown? It does not make any difference. It will be nicer and more wonderful for us teachers to be with mixed race and culture. We will certainly learn from them. We shall obtain such knowledge - a living experience!

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: INNOVATIONS/METHODOLOGIES. So the classroom is in a topsy-turvy situation. Students are very noisy; others are playful. Some are slow-learners; others arrogant and aggressive, though with brains. Hey, hey, hey, one at a time.

If I find the classroom in a topsy-turvy mood, I’d rather initiate the act to make it clean, neat, orderly and conducive to learning. I’ll pick up the pieces of paper; arrange the chairs and ask them for assistance. Through this I impart in them, without words, responsibility. Each of them (student) has a role to play in and out of the school.

ON BEHAVIOUR. If I find my students noisy and/or playful when I enter the room, I attract them by using the board only. I write short brain twisters the will prompt them to ask questions. In this case, I won. I gained their attention. And I will use this to start the day right. I usually start and end the session with a prayer. Now we can communicate effectively. Note that I did not embarrass them.

ON ATTITUDE. So I’ve got slow learners. But hey, I also got a smart one though somehow arrogant and aggressive. I will implement peer coaching. It is beneficial to both of them. The slow learners will not be shy and timid to ask questions and the smart one will have a sense of responsibility and obligation over the slow learners.

ON METHODOLOGY. I see to it that the following shall be observed in my methodology. Student participation. Every student should participate actively in every activity held. So every activity should be communicative. Likewise there should be student-to-student and student-to-teacher (and vice versa) interactions. Exchange of ideas should be given due importance.

WHOLISTIC APPROACH. As a teacher, I would always mind that my strategies should be wholistic and holistic in approach. Teaching only the subject per se is futile. We should relate it in their daily life experiences. We should integrate values into our strategies like the virtue of patience, understanding, flexibility in life, openness that will lead to loving and appreciating the subject matter and the teacher as well.

CONCLUSION. The rapid development in the growth of population in a school has reinforced great values and philosophies that are pre-destined for the achievement of the entire nation through its people per se: people of different culture, religion and race. (Not to mention our classroom management.) Therefore as teachers, we shall take the challenge of producing quality leaders of the future, be it here or in their country of origin. There will be an assurance on their part (the students) that one time in their life they came across a certain TEACHER responsible for what they are now.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

On 06 October 1960, amidst a turbulent stormy night, I, the 4th (out of five), was born to GOD-loving parents, +Mr. Dominador S. Bumanlag, Sr., and Mrs. Juanita Mungcal-Bumanlag. My Christening happened on the 28th of the same month and year and named after the great champion of GOD, St. Michael and the great saint of the Capuchin Order, St. Bruno (Michael Bruno).

My parents are both retired employees of the U.S. Military Base in the Philippines, the Clark Air Base (CAB). My Mum served for twenty-eight (28) years as Secretary (Finance Department) and Dad, forty-five (45) long years as Data Entry Clerk until it (CAB) moved out in 1992.

Spiritually, my parents reared me to be a GOD-loving person. I did have my first Holy Communion when I was eight (8). Likewise, they gave me a superb education. I finished my elementary, high school, college and graduate studies at the Angeles University Foundation.

I took B.S. in Civil Engineering and passed the licensure exam. A month after graduation I took Master of Arts in Teaching with concentration in Mathematics. Then I pushed through with my Ph.D. (Mathematics) of which I am a candidate now.

It was first at home where I learned to appreciate life, values, morality, virtues, and GOD as taught by my folks substantiated by my three (3) elder brothers. I passed on to the youngest the teachings I gained from my parents and my siblings.

We certainly, are a happy family. I still reminisce the time when my parents used to bring us to the park and visit our grand old folks after attending as Sunday service, the Catholic Church. My folks are both active in the Catholic Community which they passed on to us, their siblings. My Mum is a professed member of the Order Of Carmelite Discalced Secular (OCDS) and Dad a member of the Lay Ministry of our community. I joined the Knights of the Altar and later the Lay Ministry where I served as Commentator and Lector in the Holy Mass. My two elder siblings, Amor and Jun attended their High School at the Sacred Heart Seminary (now, Chevalier School), a day school for boys. The 3rd and the 5th , Ferdinand and Donato are both active members in the worldwide Couples for Christ.

A tragedy brought us to pains and tears when our Dad passed away on 02 May, 2001. We have so many happy memoirs and our greatest consolation is that we know and are sure that our Dad is happy to be with our creator.

At school, I was an active participant in the following clubs/organizations: English, Literary, Knights of the Blessed Sacrament, School Organ, School Annual, Sports, Drama, and yes, the MATH CLUB of which I was the recipient of the Math Wizard Award. I, too, excelled in both the Oratorical and Declamation Contest held in College years where I coached students when I taught at the University. I was likewise the president of the Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES) where I became the Adviser of the said organization when I became a teacher. At present I am a member of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines where heads and brains gather for a cause.

When I worked at Systems Technology Institute, I was asked by my superior to write books in Mathematics. I did not receive any paid royalty from the books I wrote. First it was College Algebra. My boss liked it and I wrote books in Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry and Differential and Integral Calculus. It pays not to complain and I am proud to say, “I AM WHAT I AM” now.
