Romantic wars

From mark g. carter, on Sat, 23 Oct 1999 16:06:24 GMT (in response to: THIS WAS A VERY UGLY WAR)

Wars are not romantic, only stories about them are.
Wars are starving children and women with dead eyes,
and young men who come back forever changed by the killing and
dying.

Wars are about death from the skies in the middle of the night,
and men with bayonets and frightened eyes. Nothing about fear is
romantic. Wars are about the lies soldiers tell when they get
old, because the truths are too strange to accurately remember,
and it's the truths they tell in their old age that no one will
believe, because it strains reason.

The only good wars are ones that someone else had to fight.
All the rest are wastes of lives.
