Why looking for who is to be blamed for Pol Pot

From Nicolas, on Tue, 07 May 2002 21:08:36 GMT (in response to: WHO DO WE BLAME FOR POL POT ?)

Of course the USA are to be blamed for Pol Pot because without the Vietnam War the Khmers Rouges would never reach power. Of course China is also to be blamed for Pol Pot because it provide the Khmers Rouges with weapons and advisers. But I think France is really to be blamed for Pol Pot. Why? First I'd like to remind that altough Great Britain had a wider empire than France none of its former colonny choose communism whereas Vietnam and Cambodia did (and so did other former french colonnies). Therefor the question is why such a choice who lead to the death fields of Cambodia? I think the reason is that in the time Polt Pot and the other Khmers rouges educated in France were studying at Paris they met french communist students (Pol Pot was a member of the french communist party). And the Khmer students in France association was a communist group which tried to hire every new Khmer students arriving at Paris. And when the Khmers Rouges came into power in 1975 they were supported by many french intellectuals. Even french teachers in Phom Penh welcomed them as friends despite their bad reputation and the fact that they had already evacuated all the city. The students who demonstrated for peace in the last sixties and the early seventies helped one of the lagerst slaughters ever seen to happen.

The next question is why still looking at what happen more than 25 yeras ago? The fact is that nothing has really changed : there are still communists among (best) french students and Che Gevara is regarded as a heroe. Trotskists won 9 percent of the votes at the last elections. On the first of May Maoists demonstrated in London. And the worst is that some people don't want to recognized Pol Pot's crimes as those of a communist regime (as well those of Staline or those of Mao) and therefor they still believe that communism is the future of mankind. That is quite dangerous for democraty in poor countries, say, Chiapas (in Mexico), Coloumbia, North Corea... One cannot say that Pol Pot's ideas were those of one man : they are still alive!
