From Joe N., on Fri, 10 Dec 1999 10:36:25 GMT (in response to: There is no way one can rationalize treason)
The protesters excercised their rights under the First Amendment. What sort of "patriot" considers exercising Constitutional rights to be "treason"?
I've never been a "communist" (which is, in your view, "anything you hate"). But I was an active protester against that involvement. I guess that means I have the edge in "patriotism" on you: I believe in the Constitution as a living document to be implemented--not a peace of paper framed and hung on the wall and ever after defended against being implemented.
Other posts in the message base demonstrate that there was much more going on in Viet Nam than the simple-minded either/or black-and-white "freedom" v. "communism". Tell us how the US encouraged assassination of "freedom fighter" Diem was about freedom and self-determination _by_ the Vietnamese as to their own future. Did they not also have the right to a gov't of _their_ choosing, regardless your inability to accept whatever _their_ chosen outcome?
I recommend you read the First Amendent to our Constitution some time: you might learn something from it. As example, that it exists to protect unpopular speech (which you and your "communists" would term "treason")--popular speech needs no protection.
