Give the kid a break!

From A commenter, on Sat, 28 Feb 1998 03:36:03 GMT (in response to: Hey 16 year old...)

While I don't agree with her name calling, reflective of her age, I do appreciate that a kid too young to have lived the war is bothering to take the time to learn about it. Not only that, but she's trying to participate in discussion about it to understand it further. From what I see she's doing the research you accuse her of neglecting.

I grew up watching daily news body counts on TV... my cousin watched her best friend blown away at Kent State, standing right beside him... seeing my Aunt crumple in grief when two crisply uniformed soldiers came to her door to tell her her son was missing in action (and so far his end is not clearly known).

The war began the year I was one and didn't "end" (and I say that loosely) until I was in High School - as far as I knew, Viet Nam was just a part of growing up. All those years I asked why were we there, what was it about. I was told it was a war so kids there could get a decent education and schoolbooks!! I believed that a number of years til I reached our young correspondent's age and realized that was a smoke screen - but believing the lie was a part of what shaped who I am now - and that, I resent as an adult.
