Had I not been 4-F I would have dodged the draft. As 4-F I did draft counseling while it was illegal--under the noses of the "Boston Five" trial on that very issue.
I grew up on welfare, so was obviously not middle- or upper- middle class and "comfortable". The difference? I read a great deal and learned what underlay US "altruism": greed, self-interest, and self-glorification.
Oh, sure: being 4-F I could have ignored the entire matter and gone on with my life, free of the draft Damocles. But my moral upbringing could not allow me that. I would not allow me that.
Direct your anger at those who put you in Viet Nam (if you were there), not at those who did not.
