Montagnards

1st Air Cav '66

From Spencer Matteson, on Fri, 21 Nov 1997 01:39:26 GMT

Your photos of the montagnards took me back to my days in the central highlands. I served in the 1st Air Cav from May '66 to May '67, and as an infantry rifleman spent many days humping the mountains of that region in search of Charlie.

At the time, we considered the montagnards as tribal, modern day cave men. The irony is that they were more civilized than we were.

One of my prized souvenirs while in country was a montagnard cross bow which I "found" in a montagnard hamlet. The craftsmanship was outstanding, considering the crude tools it must have been made with. Unfortunately, one of the rear echelon scabs stole it from my duffle while I was out on a subsequent operation.

Nice portfolio!
