Montagnards

The cost of a bracelet...we paid for them in a lot of ways. Often they were gifts, sometimes a few cigarettes were traded, for the bracelet, some C rations were a good trade, sometimes we were given the bracelets for just being in the area. Montenyards were a generous people for all the ones I knew. I spent some time with their kids....they followed us in packs..always wanting to carry something...just fascinated with GI's. I often wished I could talk with them...and always felt sorry for them. I knew I would get the chance to go to a safe and sane world one day...and knew they had to live in a war zone and life for them was hard and often cruel. It was good to hear the laughter of children though. the job I was sent to do I made last another day, just to spend time with them.
