It is true that our people love freedom and we would do anything to fight for it. However, I am not convince that we are doing the right thing when we sided with the American Government to fight against the Communist in Laos. Why? The French had colonized Laos and our people for nearly 71 years, yet they did not help Lao people develop anything. They did helped our people grew more opiums to sell to China and other countries. As a result, many of our people starved...children died...and those who challenged the french were beheaded! When the American entered Vietnam War, they did not care about us. They wanted to use us to fight against the Communist troops, so that their casaulties/fatalities would be less. Our leaders in Laos were manipulated by the western powers. We were not fighting for the "freedom" we claimed today my brothers and sisters.
It was a great thing that your father, your uncles, and some Hmong veterans got recognized (by a small stone in Washington D.C.). However, do you really think it is a real recognition?????? Why not include our heroes who died during the war with the American soldiers on the "Black Wall"? Think about it. I went to visit that wall five years ago and I saw no Hmong names.
You have a whole future ahead of you. You must stop living the past. You must rise today and prepare to lead our people tomorrow. We must attain our educations and fight for justice in America. We are no longer "Hmong from Laos or Thailand", but Hmong Americans. We are entitled to our rights in America. We must stand up for what we believe--that is freedom and justice. I encourage you to rise today and liberate your mind with knowledge.
Peace,
