Gayle, I'm sorry that your father died in such a way, and yes any serviceman who dies in the line of duty deserves respect. i am a British soldier and understand this sentiment. I am glad that you ended your posting with free and not great like all the other insular americans. i have posted many posts on this board telling the americans that they are not as great as they think they are.
But your politicians like all the others hid their dirty laundry and hope it goes away, however, they have kept a lot from the general public and the media in America (i have watched CNN) keep telling the americans they are all singing all dancing and although it is good to be proud of where you come from the average american that i have met and that is many take the pride thing too far, to the extent that other nations hate them. All soldiers do a job which no-one else will do. All armies are second or third rate citizens until there is a crisis.
Please remember by giving respect to others you get it back, by trampling on others your asking for trouble.
America remember you are not the only people on this earth.
