It is said that no soldier dies in vain. Unfortunately, unless people stop following blind leadership, humanity will continue to die in vain!
I am still looking for my old friend who volunteered for the 1st bde, 101st Airborne with me in 1966 while we were both serving at Rhine Kaserne, Weisbaden, Germany. His name was Ronald (Bear) Barrett, and he was from New Orleans. He stood about 6'2", and weighed about 250 lbs. He liked German beer, and had to have his stomach pumped a few times.
Many a night someone would provoke a fight in the Orchidee Bar by throwing a smoke grenade, and we would be back to back against the "Devils In Baggy Pants." (from Mainz). He, Mueler, and I were good friends, but "Bear" volunteered to be a Forward Observer, and I never heard from him again. I left Vietnam in 1967. His name isn't on the VN Memorial in Washington, so I guess he made it back ok??
As hard as I try, I still can't seem to shake the 1960's out of my system, nor can I seem to forget the friends I had in Nam.
