Children

A survivor!

From Nathan and Gwen Cummings, on Fri, 07 Apr 2000 00:22:54 GMT (in response to: OPERATION BABYLIFT)

My husband, Nathan, was one of the children rescued in "Operation Babylift." He was left on the steps of an orphanage in DaNang and the nurses who found him figured him to be only a few days old. He appears to be the child of a black American G.I. and a Vietnamese woman. He has dark skin and dark eyes that are beautifully almond shaped. He was about 4 years old when he made the trip, on foot, from DaNang to Saigon to get on the plane to America. He remembers the seats being ripped out of the plane to make room for all the people. He was injured when a grenade went off close by and the shrapnel tore through his ear. He had to have seven ear surgeries over six years time. He has very little memories, being only four, but remembers an older orphan showing him which bugs were the best to eat. He has frequent bad dreams and usually cannot remember what they were about, but usually being chased. We have two little boys. Nathan Jr. and Riley. Nathan Jr. got most of the black qualities of his father. Fairly dark skin, (I am white) dark eyes and wavy hair. His brother, Riley, got most of the Vietnamese qualities. Everyone comments on how oriental his eyes look. He has lighter skin and very straight hair. They are beautiful. My husband's adoptive parents like to tell about how Nathan used to hide food in his room. They would find sandwiches under the pillow and fruit in the dresser drawers. A result of not having had enough to eat. He still has a little of that fear. He isn't happy unless the cupboards are stocked full!! We are planning a trip to Viet Nam in about 7 or 8 years, when our boys are old enough to understand that this is where their father came from and that it is a part of their heritage. I am very glad that he was able to be brought to America. Being of mixed races, he very likely would not have lasted long in Viet Nam and I am very glad that he is my husband.
