Children

Lies

From Dinh Thi Phuc, on Fri, 15 Nov 1996 23:57:43 GMT (in response to: Please don't lie to a kid !)

So you think I am trying to poison her? With what? Understanding?
Not even once did I say that what I did as a child was right,
or good, or that the Viet Cong were some sort of heroes. Not once
did I tell her the Americans were evil, or that Democracy is evil.
All I did was try to relate to her what the sentiments were on the
other side. When I talk about the Viet Cong I don't mean the lying
scheming political machine, I mean the people of the villages, farmers,
who only wanted freedom and knew nothing of politics. My own father was
tortured and eventually killed in the war, eldest brother never returned,
and I did not leave Viet Nam until the 80s. My heart remains with my
country and always will. I know what it is like to suffer at the hands of
the enemy, and I also know what it is like to be the enemy. Do not judge me
unless you are ready to judge yourself. I ask nothing of anyone except that
you hear my story, and the story of the other side, and then decide for yourself.
I am not in the business of recruiting, only of telling my own experiences, and
like it or not, this is what happened to me.
