Sorry, but I think you are a victim of a lot of hooey.

 I lived & worked in Nam over a period of four years. 
NEVER have I ever heard or seen anything like what you related. 

What I saw most often in my job as a writer
was how much good these GIs tried to do for the
 Vietnamese to include the children.

     There are a lot of American Nam Wannabees out 
there who spread some awful stories. You may have been a victim of one of them.
