I too was there.

From Msgt Lynn F. McAtee, on Tue, 09 Dec 2003 03:22:24 GMT (in response to: I remember from far away)

I'm so happy to finally find some indication that someone else, someone who was there, who remembers that unhappy day. I was one of the primary flight crew, Flight engineer along with Tsgt Bob engles (Now lives in Grand Junction Co.) We had a Crew Reunion at Travis AFB about 8 yrs ago at the new 44th ALS building. Most of the surviving crew members were there. As might be expected, many tears were shed. Col. Bud Trainer Aircraft commander and the Co-pilot were there as well. I wish I could remember all the names, but time is taking it's tole on my memory. A memorial to those who gave their lives was unvailed and dedicated during the event. I have many bitter-sweet memories of the events of that day, and many I wish I could forget. Never will I forget the smell of blood, jp-4 and hydraulic fluid that prevaded the entire area. These many years later a few of us who were there touch bases and reminise. I guess I'd still call that event "Ford's folly", or is it stupidity? There were several "Medivac" aircraft ready at Clark AB. ready to take the mission, but the "Big Shots" (In my opinion) had to make the big grandstand play with the "Big Boys Toy". Oh well, I guess we have a minor place in History because of it. Msgt Lynn F. McAtee USAF Retired. (E-address lynmac@plainsmt.net) Plains Montana. I'd like to hear from those who were there.
