The U.S. went to VN for many reasons. Some of these were very altrustic(wanting to save them from oppression) and some were opportunistic(battle the communist movement on its own continent). Children are always the most heartbreaking part of war. I learned to love these children while I was there. They were most always willing to help and having them around brought some joy into the otherwise dismal life of being in war. Only Lyndon Johnson's spirit could tell why he kept us there for so long.
