Most Americans didn't want the war....

Blame the politicians, because if the U.S. would have taken a public opinion about the war, they would have been out well before 1970. It wasn't America's intent to mess up Vietnam, we were just trying to help. I can't blame you for being angry, I'm angered by many actions of the U.S. government myself, but the context you used, seemed to project that all American's are bad.
