Military

ignorance of the facts

From Chuck Bordell, on Tue, 26 Nov 1996 22:16:45 GMT (in response to: WISH ALL VETS WERE KILLED)

Dear Sir,

Your comments on vietnam war vets deserve closer scrutiny because they are indicative of the mindset that led to one of the greatest tragedies in American history: the ostracizing of soldiers returning from the war. Your generalization equating all soldiers with "psychopaths" strikes me as being the same a spitting on a marine or shouting "baby killer" to a man you know nothing about. You, and people like you, are directing your anger at the American government for involving us in the Vietnam War at the wrong target. Do you think those soldiers wanted to be in that situation?

You say that you have an interest in discovering the facts about Vietnam. Well, you obviously haven't done so yet. The facts are there for you to find, if you cared enough to put the time and effort into it. I'm not self-righteous enough to tell you I know all the facts. I wasn't there. I'm 28 years old. I have a degree in archaeology with a specific interest in battle reconstruction. I've studied military history for years. What have you done except spew forth your biased, uninformed judgement after reading one or two books on a very specific and unfortunate incident?

I imagine you feel that any response disagreeing with you must be written by a conservative, pro-war vet trying to assuage his own conscience. I'm none of those things, and I still think you are way off base with your diatribe, and that you should examine your own motives for posting such a hateful, unintelligent commentary.
