We lost two aircraft to SAMs while I was at Phan Rang

From Ken an Australian in 2 squadron Phan Rang, on Sat, 07 Jun 1997 10:33:58 GMT

I spent my tour at Phan Rang. I was an airman radio technician
responsible for maintaining the Green Doppler Radar units
which were used to feed Drift and Groundspeed for use in the
Canberra Bomber's bombsights.
I flew many times out of Phan Rang to test the accuracy
and reliability of the system. We flew unarmed over this
entire Military region.
We lost two canberra bombers. One in early November 1970,
and the other in March 1971. We had two MIA's from the first
and we were lucky enough to extract the crew of the second
aircraft from the jungle thanks to our the efforts of our
American allies. We were attached to the 35th Tact Fighter
Wing and part of the 7th USAF.
I'll add more to the story later ...but I do remeber the tap
charm temple out side our base at Phan Rang.
