Robert, You're right. We were in Nam for the specific reason of holding the communists in check. It was supposed to be so elections could be held. We were there long enough to give it a chance. It wasn't our responsibility to make it work. I still think that under the circumstances we did a pretty good job. Without the commitment of the South Vietnamese, without the complete support of our own politicians, a teenage army of Americans held the S.O.B.'s back for 10 years. If the U.S. is going to use our military for this sort of "police action" in the future, we had better be prepared for stuff like Viet Nam, and people like Sadam Husein remaining in power long after we kicked his ass. I don't have to like it, but let's not blame the soldiers who went when they were called.
