Dear Danny

From Bryan ) Air cav , on Thu, 19 Dec 1996 22:26:38 GMT (in response to: Same old stroy)

We weren't trying to be heroes. I am saddened by your feelings toward
us and I hope I can understand where you are coming from. I served in the
Nam for 2 tours, at the time it seemed the right thing to do.
When I got married my wife made me promise not to tell any children we had
about my former life as she was an adamant peace activist and
only married me because she could see past my short fallings (her
words) to the real person within.
Danny I agree, we don't need more heroes like us and the only way to stop creating
them is to actively tell the powers that be that we won't stand for them putting us
on the line to solve their petty disputes.
My wife and I split up two years ago but I still won't tell my three kids what I did
loyalty and love are funny things. Danny, I'm not asking you to change your mind, that's
not my right, but please as I told my wife almost 30 years ago,
be sure that your righteous anger is directed at the right people.
We don't want to be heroes, we aren't, we know that but it was a part of our lives so
we live with it.
Danny, if someday you are in a position to really make a difference about
whether a combat situation develops or not I TRULY hope you keep the
hate you have for war as don't doom more guys to become heroes.
