Re: Ethical Obligation

From Grant Jenkins, on Tue, 10 Sep 1996 03:50:35 GMT (in response to: Ethical obligation?)

Perhaps ethical obligation is beyond nationalist boundaries.
When we have someone other in our crosshairs, there is a moment
in which we can ask the question "Why?" Because an impersonal,
imperial nation-state said so? We may pull the trigger anyway,
but that does not get rid of the questions, doubt, guilt, and
uncertainty. What that moment of (in)decision does is bring into
question the very system of values that we rely on to make such
(ethical) responses. My point is that the right and wrong of Vietnam,
not to mention any war or violent act, is very complex.
I personally value human life over all, but
that alone does not mean that I wouldn't pull the trigger if I
were in a situation like many were in Vietnam. However, I have
the hope that we can avoid such situations altogether. You may
call me a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. . .
