This course provides an introduction to advanced topics in Organic Chemistry, stressing the theoretical and physical aspects. The grade will be based on three exams, a final, and possibly some assignments. The final will be comprehensive. No make-up exams will be given: if circumstances require missing an exam, prior arrangments must be made with the instructor.
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Anyone found cheating on an exam will be given a zero for that exam. A second infraction will result in immediate expulsion from the class and a failing grade. Any violations of academic integrity will be noted in a letter placed in your file.
Schedule of Topics
1. Brief review.
2. Bonding and Molecular Orbital Theory (chapter 1)
3. Fundamentals of Physical Organic Chemistry (chapter 2)
4. Acidity (chapter 3)
5. Pericyclic Reactions (chapters 10 & 11)
6. Photochemistry (chapter 12)
7. Carbonyl Chemistry (chapter 8)
8. Radical Chemistry (chapter 9)
9. Ionic Chemistry (chapters 4 - 7)
