Course objectives: This course will be conducted primarily in French. The objectives of this course are to further develop the fours basic skills of French: comprehending, speaking, reading and writing with the help of classroom practice and drills, reinforced by audio-visual materials and exercises.

Course competencies: By the end of this course, the student should have learned to:

1. handle with confidence (but not necessarily ease) most social situations, including introductions and casual conversations about current events;
2. deal with work, family and autobiographical information and have sufficient language competence to handle limited work requirements not involving linguistic complications or difficulties;
3. get the gist of most conversations on subjects requiring no specialized knowledge and have a speaking vocabulary sufficient to communicate in a simple manner with some degree of rhetorical skill;
4. pronounce in an intelligible fashion and handle elementary constructions accurately even if not entirely in control of grammar;
5. make phone calls, give directions, greet and say goodbye to friends, and discuss subjects such as food, sports, the weather, bodily activities and parts;
6. grasp in some detail the cultural and historical background involved in the study of French; and
7. appreciate the cultural and historical underpinnings of materials studied.

Classroom activities: 3 classes per week which will include:

1. introduction of new materials and discussion of vocabulary and grammatical features presented in the lesson under consideration;
2. reading of texts by the students in class which will be used to create dialogues between students and the instructor;
3. discussion of students’ homework exercises and review of common problems; and
4. drills on vocabulary, grammatical features and sentence patterns introduced using a variety of techniques – such as repetition, question and answer and guided use of paradigms – to create spontaneous conversation between the students and role playing.

Language Laboratory Activities 4 hours per week, which will include:

1. listening to cassette tapes (or CDs) of the lesson (this may be done outside the lab at the students’ convenience);
2. using available interactive computer software developed for each lesson;
3. viewing available videos developed for each lesson;
4. using programs on the Internet to develop reading skills; and
5. studying micro-tutorials (available in the lab).

Attendance and Course Grading:

Attendance

Excellent attendance is essential for learning French and receiving a good grade. The Department of Modern Languages allows three (3) unexplained absences only. Thereafter absences will lower your grade. You are responsible for finding out what was done in class if you are absent. Four or more absences or constant tardiness will be penalized by a loss of grade points. An excused absence from an examination requires at least a three-day prior approval from the instructor or a written medical excuse. Make-up examinations will be given at the instructor’s discretion.

All assignments must be completed before the day indicated on the syllabus. Prepare readings at home so that we can use class time for discussion, interpretation and review.
