Final Reflection

Volunteer work or community service that has an academic component is often highly valued by human service professionals. Teaching, social work and nursing are fields that welcome an individual who has a track record of giving to others and who has reflected on that effort.

At Seton Hall, the Service Learning Institute assists students as they participate in service learning.

Tutoring, field experiences, and student teaching are all examples of service learning, unpaid extended contributions that are awarded academic credit when successfully completed. Other service learning activities that college students have done for academic credit include: serving in a soup kitchen, building a playground, creating a community garden, serving as a  literacy volunteer, delivering meals on wheels, building homes  for Habitat for Humanity, reading for the visually impaired, assisting for Special Olympics, leading an after-school program, or guiding activities for the elderly in a senior citizen home. These activities enable students to  empathize for diverse and sometimes disadvantaged groups as well as gain in self understanding.  A journal, research paper, presentation to a local community group, or a curriculum can be reflective products developed from these experiences that display what students have learned from their experience.
