A series of reports have advocated for more
realistic training for teachers and have caused field experience to be
enhanced in teacher education programs {A Nation at Risk (1983),
A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century (1986),
Tomorrow's Teachers: Report of the Holmes Group (1986),
Teachers for our Nation's Schools(1990), What Matters
Most: Teaching for America's Future (1996), Doing What
Matters Most: Investing in Tomorrow's Teachers (1997)}.
Partnerships between universities and schools whose purpose is to
improve the education of teachers have increased. In some of these
arrangements, college courses are taught on-site, teachers become
adjunct professors or exchange roles with university faculty, or
professional development schools serve as training grounds for both
preservice and experienced teachers. A study of beginning teacher
retention revealed that preservice students who had field experience as
part of their teacher education programs were more likely to remain in
the profession than graduates from course-based teacher education
programs (1998).
Structured observation of classrooms and schools,
tutoring, case studies, shadowing an experienced professional, planning
and presenting lessons and units, and conducting investigations can be
assignments incorporated in field experiences. The opportunity to work
closely with a practicing teacher or team of teachers and with groups of
students provides invaluable background for prospective teachers and
help university coursework come alive.
The Secondary Education Program field experience
sites include Summit, Cranford, Camden Middle Technology and Vailsburg
Public Schools.
