Units are a group of lesson plans based on a single topic typically taught
in a curriculum, for example, fractions. Units can also be thematic, for
example, The Sixties. Or they can be interdisciplinary, incorporating different
subjects around a single theme. Most units contain:
- a rationale
(significance and purpose of the topic for this group with reference to
state/national standards),
- targets (knowledge, reasoning, skills,
affective objectives)
- assessments (quizzes, testing, written papers,
oral questions, interviews/conferences, performance-based task, portfolio,
affective measure)
- materials

State departments and school districts sometimes
employ teachers to write curriculum during the summer, and curriculum
writers can also work in teams for Research and Development
Labs. Education offers a wealth of opportunities; skillful writing and
creativity matched with an understanding of planning with purpose for
students can be your ticket to a challenging position in education.
