"Motivation" is certainly what the experimenter thinks will
differ among the groups.  But it isn't an operational answer.
He assumes that he is manipualting motivation by offering
differently sized rewards, but the label you give the indepen-
dent variable shouldn't be based on assumptions.  A different
answer expresses what was more directly manipulated.
