Chat (2)
How does it work
Netscape Chat is available via FTP from ftp.netscape.com
in Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Macintosh versions. It is compatible with 'standard'
Internet relay chat, but offers at least one significant advantage:
The web page you are looking at can be made to appear at the click of
a button at every chat participant's screen
That means that you can in advance prepare web pages on a certain topic (including, as
usual, text, pictures, sounds, etc) and you can 'send' them to every participant
immediately. Then you can discuss those web pages in detail with everybody, and bring up
further pages whenever needed.
To make chat work, you also need access to a chat server.
There are many public chat servers available that you can use free of charge. A better
approach, however, is to install the Chat server software on a Unix machine and use that
machine instead. It has the advantage that your sessions are easier to find, there are
less distractions (public chat servers sometimes carry thousands of chat rooms) and your
session is probably only attended by people you want. Of course, everybody on the internet
could join your chat session even if you are using a local server, if that's what you
want.
